Abstract

Background: A large number of studies have focused on microplastic pollution. Microplastics are contaminants that have received great attention, due to their ecological, social, economic and health impacts. In the aquatic environment, microplastics are found in water and sediments. As much as 30% of microplastics settles in surface water and in the water column and almost the entire 70% settles in sediments.

Methods: Search for literature sources from online journal databases namely Science Direct and Springer Link. Literature searches are the latest articles published in the last 10 years, namely 2010-2020.

Results: The abundance of microplastics in water can be influenced by various physical factors such as temperature, salinity, pH, season and wind. Study of microplastics in water and sediments originating from coasts, seas, lakes, rivers, estuaries, urban waterways and bays. Fragments and fibers are the most frequently reported forms and types of plastics.

Conclusion: Fragments and fibers are the most frequently reported forms and types of plastics which are generally in line with the world's demand for plastics. The recommendations provided are information for policy makers in managing plastics, especially those containing fragments and fibers that contribute to the composition of microplastics and thereby reduce pollution in the aquatic environment.
