Abstract

Background: Flies act as mechanical vectors in the transmission of environment-based diseases such as
diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever. Traditional markets such as Limboto Market are high-risk
locations for fly presence due to inadequate sanitation conditions and high food trading activity. Based on a
preliminary survey using a fly grill, fly density at Limboto Market ranged from 4–6 flies/fly grill, classified as
a moderate category according to Indonesian Minister of Health Decree No. 50 of 2017. Trap color is one of
the factors influencing fly capture effectiveness, as fly eyes have different sensitivities to light wavelengths,
particularly in the yellow and green color ranges.
Objective: To determine differences in the number of house flies (Musca domestica) captured using fly net
traps with yellow and green color variations at Limboto Market.
Method: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a posttest only design. Samples consisted of house
flies (Musca domestica) captured at three observation locations, namely the fish and meat selling area,
vegetable selling area, and food selling area, with four repetitions. Each repetition used 6 fly net trap units
consisting of 3 yellow and 3 green units. Data were analyzed using the Independent Samples t-test.
Results: The average number of house flies (Musca domestica) captured by yellow fly net traps was 32 flies,
higher than green fly net traps at 22 flies. The Independent t-test showed a p-value of 0.003 (p < 0.05) with a mean difference of 9.750, indicating a significant difference in the number of flies captured between yellow
and green fly net traps, with yellow fly net traps being more effective in capturing house flies.
Conclusion: There is a significant difference between yellow and green fly net traps in the number of house
flies (Musca domestica) captured at Limboto Market.
